URAC Seeks Public Comment on Performance Measures for Health Plan Accreditation

Washington, DC (Vocus/PRWEB) April 05, 2011

URAC, a leading health care accreditation and education organization, today opened a call for public comment to share input and opinions on proposed performance measures being added to its Health Plan suite of standards.

Purchasers, policy makers, consumers, health care management organizations, employers, and health plans are encouraged to provide their comments on the proposed URAC standards at http://www.urac.org/publiccomment/. The deadline for public comment is 6:00pm EDT on May 20, 2011.

“URAC understands that performance measures lead to greater transparency and increased consumer empowerment,” said Alan Spielman, President and CEO of URAC. “Our goals in this development will be to focus on measures that are meaningful and relevant for consumers, health plans, and purchasers; promote quality improvement, efficiency and effectiveness in the health care delivery system; and develop the most comprehensive view of quality while balancing administrative burdens and the benefits of reporting performance to the public.”

Consistent with URAC’s standards development process, performance measure selection and development is done collaboratively with multiple stakeholders working though a multi-stage process that includes public comment.

The measures open for comment fall into a number of domains, including:

    Patient Centeredness
    Care Coordination
    Efficiency
    Effectiveness of Care
    Patient Safety
    Health Plan Administration
    Health Information Technology Integration/Meaningful Use
    Healthcare Disparities

Measures are designated as either “mandatory” or “leading.” Mandatory measures are those that the organization is required to report as part of the accreditation process and failure to report them may affect the accreditation status. Leading measures are those that are “state-of-the-art” or “cutting edge,” or measures for which there is not an accepted, standardized, industry-wide measurement methodology.

URAC regularly reviews and revises its standards and accreditation programs to consistently align with current market needs and government regulations including those related to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA). In addition, URAC seeks to actively engage health plans, purchasers, and consumers to ensure we understand their emerging needs and priorities as the health care environment changes during implementation of the PPACA.
