Today, Michael Madden, MD, Medical Director at Gateway Health Plan, one of the nation’s top ranking Medicaid HMOs headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will deliver the keynote address at the Managed Care Association of Pennsylvania 2004 Annual Conference. Dr. Madden, a recognized expert on the topic of health literacy, will speak from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza – Harrisburg

Health literacy is defined by the National Library of Medicine as “the degree to which people can obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services they need to make appropriate health decisions.” Dr. Madden’s presentation will address the importance of improving health care information communication and encouraging health professionals and others to learn about health literacy. Gateway Health Plan has been involved with the issues of health literacy for several years. In fact, Gateway has identified health literacy as one its chief initiatives.

Observed each October, Heath Literacy Month promotes awareness focusing attention on the fact that much of the health information people need is difficult to impossible to understand. “Over 90 million adults have limited ability to read and understand the instructions contained on prescriptions or medicine bottles, appointment slips, informed-consent documents, insurance forms and health-education materials,” states Dr. Madden.
