The Business Challenge
As a global organization providing content throughout the organization in a consistent manner and then locating that content within the enterprise once it was created, were significant hurdles. The inability to locate content not only affected the employeeÂs ability to complete simple tasks (writing a press release), it also affected customers and investors ability to effectively search for information on the corporate web site.

The client was evaluating content management options for an enterprise deployment. The lack of efficient search capabilities and content classification were significant short-comings of the current content management process. The IT organization recognized the need to improve their search engine technology, but also identified the need for a comprehensive evaluation of how content would be classified.
They identified the need to develop a comprehensive metadata and taxonomy strategy.
DefinedLogicÂs Solution
Working closely with the business team and the technology team, DefinedLogic created a three-tiered metadata structure and defined an enterprise taxonomy. The three-tiered metadata structure allowed for rigid enterprise standards while affording flexibility to individual business units.
The solution also afforded organizations within the enterprise that had existing taxonomies and topic maps the ability to seamlessly integrate their content up through the enterprise.
Because the business user community had little or no experience defining a taxonomy and / or metadata elements, a top-down approach was taken to define the overall strategy. This approach enables business users to identify content types that relate directly to known business processes. Because they are familiar with these documents, it is easy to identify the data elements required to search and tag the content. These data elements begin to form the metadata structure for the organization.
Once the content types and metadata elements were defined the business team was put through an exercise to begin to expand and categorize the terms used within their content creation process.
The Result
At the conclusion of the metadata and taxonomy exercises the business team was not only able to define a comprehensive strategy; they now understood the importance of such a strategy.
With a solid foundation to classify and search content consistently throughout the enterprise they are positioned for greater success.
